Soil & Water: Legumes like well to drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering which can promote disease.
Planting & Growing: Start indoors in short to season climates, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65?F, preferably after the last frost. Make small, successive plantings every 10 days for a continuous harvest.
Harvesting & Storage: Bush beans will produce all of their fruit over a few weeks' time. For best flavor, harvest the pods when they reach 1/2'' in diameter regardless of their length. Pick pole beans regularly to extend harvest period. When you have enough beans harvested you can let the remaining beans mature and dry them on the vine to use as shell beans. Fresh pole beans freeze well.
Did You Know? Pole beans can be grown on a fence or trellis. Snap beans are ready to pick when the pod breaks cleanly in half.
