Soil & Water: Sunflowers grow best in well-drained locations. They are heavy feeders and will grow best when organically fertilized.
Planting & Growing: While you can start sunflowers indoors before the last frost, their roots grow so rapidly, a container will often stunt their growth. Planting them directly in the garden after the last frost is your best bet for large plants.
Harvesting & Storage: Once the petals start to fall off, cover the flower heads with a light mesh or burlap to prevent birds from stealing your harvest. Once the head is completely dry, remove the seeds, roast them if you like, and store in air tight containers.
Did You Know? Not all sunflowers are large and full of plump seeds for eating. If your intention is to harvest the sunflower seeds for consumption, your best bet is the Mammoth Sunflower.
